Die Handelsflagge von Malta geht auf die Insignien des christlichen Johanniterordens (auch Malteserorden) zurück, der Inseln zwischen 1530 und 1798 beherrschte. Die Form des Kreuzes in der Flagge wird daher auch Malteserkreuz genannt. Im Englischen Sprachraum wird die Handelsflagge Merchant Flag oder Civil Ensign genannt. Im internationalen Schiffsverkehr ist die Flagge recht beliebt, weil es offenbar attraktiv ist Schiffe oder Jachten in Malta zu registrieren. Auch für Überführungen wird die Fahne gerne genutzt, z.B. wenn ein für einen deutschen Kunden gebautes Schiff oder Boot im französischen Marseille vom Stapel läuft, kann man es unkompliziert in Malta registrieren, und die Maltesische Flagge für die Überfahrt nach Deutschland nutzen. In Deutschland angekommen, wird das Wasserfahrzeug in Malta wieder abgemeldet, und dann in Deutschland registriert.

The merchant flag of Malta dates back to the insignia of the Christian Order of St. John (also known as the Order of Malta), which ruled the islands between 1530 and 1798. The shape of the cross in the flag is therefore the so called Maltese Cross. In English, the merchant flag is also called Civil Ensign. The flag is quite popular in international shipping because it is obviously attractive to register ships or yachts in Malta. The flag is also used for overpasses, e.g. if a ship or boat built for a German customer is launched in Marseille, France, it is easy to register it in Malta, and to use the Maltese flag for the crossing to Germany. Arrived in Germany, the vessel is deregistered again in Malta, and then registered in Germany.
