Bedeutung/Ursprung der Flagge: Meaning/Origin of the Flag:
Die Flagge von Athos mit dem Doppeladler in der Mitte erinnert an die alte byzantinische Flagge. Sie zeigt den Doppeladler jedoch in schwarz, auf goldenem Grund. Er ist eigentlich das Symbol römischer Herrschermacht, dass auch in den Flaggen des russischen Zaren, des Heiligen Römischen Reiches Deutscher Nation, oder des österreichisch-ungarischen Kaiserreichs weiterlebte. The flag of Athos with the double-eagle in the centre is a reminder of the old Byzantine flag. It shows the double-eagle, although in black on golden ground.
It is really the symbol of Roman rule, which also survived in the flags of the Russian Czar, the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, or the Austro-Hungarian Empire.`
