29.11.1791 · Entdeckung durch den britischen Seefahrer William Robert Broughton, britische Inbesitznahme
1835 · Maori von Neuseeland überfallen die Inseln, die meisten Moriori werden getötet
1843 · Eintreffen deutscher Siedler, Gründung einer deutschen Kolonie durch Karl Sieveking, deren Nachfahren noch heute auf der Hauptinsel leben
1995 · die Inselgruppe erhält ihre Selbstverwaltung zurück und wird eine "Besondere Gebietskörperschaft", die damit zu keiner Region und zu keinem Bezirk Neuseelands gehört

1843 · arrival of German settlers, founding of a German colony by Karl Sieveking, their descendants live until today on the main island
1995 · the island group regains its autonomy and becomes a "Special territorial authority", which not belongs to a region or a district of New Zealand

Als der britische Seefahrer William Robert Broughton die Insel entdeckte, benannte er sie nach seinem Schiff, die "HMS Chatham". Es war benannt nach John Pitt, 2. Earl of Chatham, Erster Lord der Admiralität.	When the British seafarer William Robert Broughton discovered the island, he named it after his ship the "HMS Chatham". This was named after John Pitt, 2nd Earl of Chatham, First Lord of the Admiralty.
