Bedeutung/Ursprung der Flagge: Meaning/Origin of the Flag:
Epirus kam erst 1913 in Folge des Balkankrieges von 1912/13 an Griechenland, nachdem es jahrhundertelang zur Türkei gehörte. Innerhalb der Bevölkerungsstruktur ist der Anteil der Griechen relativ gering, so dass Epirus über eine sehr eigenständige Kultur verfügt. Auf der Flagge erkennt man die griechische Kreuzflagge, jedoch in farblicher Umkehrung, und mittig darübergelegt ein schwarzer byzantinischer Doppeladler. Beides, Kreuz und Adler, sind griechische Symbole. Epirus did not join Greece until 1913 due to the consequences of the Balkan War of 1912/13. The region was previously for hundreds of years a part of Turkey. Within the population structure the share of Greeks is relatively low, thus Epirus has a very distinct culture.
The Greek cross-flag is easily recognized on the flag, however, the colours are reversed, and the black Byzantine double-eagle is superimposed onto the cross. Both, cross and eagle, are Greek symbols.`
