Shetland ist eine Inselgruppe in der Nordsee, mehrere Kilometer von Schottlands Nordostküste entfernt. Ihre Einwohner sind, wie die Orkadianer (=> Orkney-Inseln), nordischer Abstammung. Ein nordischer Dialekt wird hier noch gesprochen. Diese Flagge wurde 1960 von Studenten ins Leben gerufen, und reflektiert die skandinavische Abstammung.
