Bedeutung/Ursprung der Flagge: Meaning/Origin of the Flag:
Johore war ein Teil des Sultanats Lingga, so dass hier die ursprünglich schwarze Flagge von Lingga wehte. Der 1855 eingesetzte Temenggong des Sultans von Lingga öffnete noch im selben Jahr das Land. Im Jahre 1858 änderte er die Flagge. Sie blieb zwar schwarz, zeigte jedoch eine rote Oberecke mit einem weißen Andreaskreuz darin. 1868 ernannte der Temenggong sich selbst zum Maharadscha. Damit war die ohnehin nur noch lockere Bindung an Lingga, das längst   niederländischer Besitz geworden war, endgültig gelöst. Johore was a part of the Sultanate of Lingga so that here was initially in use the black flag of Lingga. The Temenggong of the Sultan of Lingga, who was chosen in 1855 even opened the country in the same year. In the year 1858 he changed the flag. It maintained in black, but showed a red upper staff quadrant with a white diagonal cross.
In 1868 the Temenggong elevated hisself to Maharajah. In this way was detached the anyhow casual allegiance to Lingga, which became meanwhile a Dutch possession.
Im Jahre 1871 wurden neue Flaggen eingeführt, die alle die islamische Symbolik von Halbmond und Stern zeigten. In der Gestaltung der Flaggen lehnte man sich an das britische Ensign-System an. In 1871 were introduced new flags which all show the Islamic symbolism of crescent and star.
The design of the flags was orientated in the British ensign-system.
Großbritannien hatte in Jahr 1864 ein Flaggensystem eingeführt, in dem:
  • Kriegsschiffe einen sogenannten "White Ensign" (Marineflagge), eine weiße Flagge oft mit durchgehendem roten Georgskreuz und mit dem Union Jack in der Oberecke,
  • Handelsschiffe einen "Red Ensign" (auch "Civil Ensign" => Bürgerflagge genannt, die eigentl. Handelsflagge), eine rote Flagge mit dem Union Jack in der Oberecke, und
  • Dienstschiffe einen "Blue Ensign" (Regierungsflagge => die eigentl. Staatsflagge), eine blaue Flagge mit dem Union Jack in der Oberecke führten.
 Great Britain introduced a flag system in 1864 in which:
  • war ships fly the "White Ensign" (naval flag), a white flag often with an uninterrupted red St. George's-Cross and with the Union Jack in the upper staff quadrant of the flag,
  • merchant ships fly a "Red Ensign" (also named "Civil Ensign" => civil flag, the real merchant flag), a red flag with the Union Jack in the upper staff quadrant of the flag, and
  • governmental ships fly the "Blue Ensign" (flag for the use by the gouvernment => the actual state flag), a blue flag with the Union Jack in the upper staff quadrant of the flag.
Am 01.04.1946 wurde auch Johore Mitglied in der Malaiischen Union. Der Maharadscha wurde dabei zum Sultan erhoben. Die gemeinsame Außen- und Verteidigungspolitik machte die Marine- und auch Handelsflaggen der Mitgliedsstaaten überflüssig. Die bisherige Dienstflagge wurde neue Nationalflagge. On 1st of April in 1946 Johore became a member in the Malay Union, too. The Maharajah got elevated to a Sultan. The common politics in foreign affairs and defense made the naval and even the merchant flags of the membering states unnecessary. The hitherto official flag became the new national flag.
Die Nationalflagge von Johore, dem mächtigsten Bundesstaat enthält die Farben Blau, Weiß und Rot, und könnte somit bei der Gestaltung der Bundesflagge von 1950 Modell gestanden haben. The national flag of Johore, the mightiest federal state, contains the colours blue, white and red, and could in this way have been the pattern for the designing of the federal flag of 1950.
