Bedeutung/Ursprung der Flagge: meaning/origin of the flag:
Die Flagge von Samos enthält zunächst griechische Symbolik in Form des weißen Kreuzes, und erinnert so an die griechische Kreuzflagge. Jedoch sind die oberen beiden Felder des Gevierts rot und erinnern entfernt an die türkische Flagge (die Insel stand faktisch bis 1908 unter türkischer Oberhoheit), wobei natürlich der islamische Halbmond weggelassen wurde. The flag of Crete contains first of all the Greek symbolism of the white cross and reminds in this way of the Greek cross-flag.
But the two upper fields of the qaurter are red and remind distantly of the Turkish flag (the island stood nominally under Turkish supremacy until 1908), naturally deleting the Islamic crescent.`
