Bedeutung/Ursprung der Flagge: Meaning/Origin of the Flag:

Die Flagge von Illinois war Sieger in einem Wettbewerb und wurde am 06.07.1915 eingeführt. Sie zeigt ein weißes Grundtuch und darauf Teile des Staatssiegels: einen Schild mit den Farben der USA, einen Felsen mit den Jahreszahlen 1818 und 1868, einen Weißkopfseeadler mit einem Spruchband im Schnabel, darauf das Motto des Landes: "State Sovereignty, National Union", im Hintergrund ein Gewässer und die aufgehende Sonne.

The flag of Illinois was the winner in a competition and was introduced on 6th of July in 1915. It shows a white bunting and on it parts of the State Seal: a scutcheon with the colors of the United States, a rock with the years of 1818 and 1868, a bald eagle with a banner in its beak, on it the motto of the country: "State Sovereignty, National Union", in the background waters and the rising sun.

Das Gewässer ist der Michigansee, Schild und Adler repräsentieren die USA. Die Jahreszahlen stehen für das Gründungsjahr des Staates und das Jahr, in dem das Siegel zuletzt festgelegt wurde.

The water is Lake Michigan, shield and eagle represent the United States. The years represent the founding year of the state and the year in which the seal was determined last.

Im Jahre 1970 wurde der Name des Staates auf der Flagge ergänzt.

Der Name des Landes ist eine Mischung aus der Algonkin-Sprache und Französisch. Er bezieht sich auf das hier früher lebende Volk der "Illiniwek" oder "Illini". Der Name des Volkes heißt übersetzt: "Stamm der überlegenen Männer". The name of the country is a mixture of the Algonquian language and French. It refers to the people who lived here before, the "Illiniwek" or "Illini". The name of the people means translated: "tribe of superior men".
