The state seal was introduced in 1867 and it shows a landscape with a blacksmith in the foreground (Engineering), a tree, wheat sheaves and a log cabin (Agriculture), a river (Missouri) with a side-wheeler (Trade), in the background a rail transport driving in the direction of the mountains (Rocky Mountains). In the sky of the landscape a banner with the motto of the country: "Equality before the law (equality before the law.

In the years before the introduction of the current flag there was probably an unofficial flag, at least it was mentioned in then print products, in 1915 in the "Nebraska Blue Book" and in 1917 in the "National Geographic Magazine". It showed a single coloured golden bunting and in the middle the state seal.
