Meaning/Origin of the Flag: |
The flag of the United
Arab Emirates was officially adopted on 2nd of December in 1971, on the occasion of
theattainment of the independence from Great Britain. It shows three horizontal stripes in
green, white and black, and a vertical red stripe on the mast. The width of the red stripe
is differently reported, one third or half of the height of the flag.
Red is the colour, which the flags of
the individual Emirates have together, green stands for fertility, white for neutrality
and black for the oil, from which the country owes its prosperity.
Omajiaden, eine Kalifendynastie, die auf den fünften Kalifen Moawija I. zurückgeht;
The colour quartet of
four, green, white, black and red is a special Arabian colours symbol, the Panarabian
colours. The (Pan)Arabian colours were officially introduced by the Sheriff Hussein of
Mekka of the lineage of the Hashemides as colours of the Arabian Movement
during the First World War at the secession of the Kingdom of Hedjas from the Ottoman
Empire. The flag of Hedjas served as pattern. The colours have the following meaning: Red is the colour of Omar, the
second calif; white stands for the Omajiades, a calif-dynasty, which goes back to
the fifth calif Moawija I.; green stands for the Fatimides, a ismailitic-shiit
calif-dynasty, which goes back to the fourth calif Ali; and black stands for the
Abbasides, a calif-dynasty, which goes back to the calif Abbas I. Red is also the colour
of the Hashemides, an Arabian sovereign-dynasty, which probably goes back to Hashim ibn
Abd al-Manaf, the grandfather of Mohammed. Green is in addition generally the colour of
Islam, and does not refer only to the Arabian countries.
The head of state, the
Chairman Emir, has his own flag. It corresponds to the national flag of the UAE, but it
carrys the emblem of the UAE in the middle of the white stripe.
Already in 1958 had
been introduced a flag for the in 1952 under British sovereignty into being called Trucial
Council. It showed three horizontally stripes in red, white and red in the ratio 1:2:1. In the
middle of the wide white stripe was placed a green seven-pointed star. Its rays stood for
the seven emirates in the Council. Originally, nine were planned, but Qatar and Bahrain
joined not.
All ships of the
Emirates in the Trucial Council used until the independence the flag of the Maritime Peace
of 1820. |

Meaning/Origin of the Coat of Arms: |

was the emblem of Dubai. The eight-member chain symbolizied the eight members of the
Federation and Qatar, which did finally not join the federation. The hawk holds in the
clutches a red banner with the name of the state. On 22nd of March in 2008 was introduced
