Bedeutung/Ursprung der Flagge: Meaning/Origin of the Flag:

The today's flag of Cyprus was first hoisted on 6th of April in 1960, but the stylized map of the country was white and was wearing only an orange outline. On the occasion of independence on 16th of August in 1960 has been adopted the today's model, the map is completely orange coloured.

As the flag was designed the Archbishop Makarios III. and the leader of the Turkish minority Dr Kücük agreed, that the heraldry of Cypus should not contain Greek or Turkish symbolism.

Therefore the flag shows a single-coloured white bunting and on it a stylized orange-coloured (actually bright copper color, Pantone 144) map of the island. Below appear two green crossed olive branches. The copper color is an indication for the into the ancient world known copper deposits on the island, which have given the island its name (Kyprion = Greek for copper). The color white and the olive branches represent the ideal of peace and harmony.

After the separation of Turkish northern Cyprus, the Cypriot flag has been preserved from Greek Southern Cyprus.
However, it is only officially used by agencies and authorities. The population uses the Greek flag.

In British colonial times was hoisted the usual blue official flag (Blue Ensign) with the Union Jack in the upper staff quadrant and the emblem of the country in the flying part of the flag.

Great Britain introduced a flag system in 1864 in which:

  • war ships fly the "White Ensign" (naval flag), a white flag often with an uninterrupted red St. George's-Cross and with the Union Jack in the upper staff quadrant of the flag,
  • merchant ships fly a "Red Ensign" (also named "Civil Ensign" => civil flag, the real merchant flag), a red flag with the Union Jack in the upper staff quadrant of the flag, and
  • governmental ships fly the "Blue Ensign" (flag for the use by the gouvernment => the actual state flag), a blue flag with the Union Jack in the upper staff quadrant of the flag.

Since 1865 ships of colonial governments were permitted to fly the Blue Ensign with a badge in the flying end of the flag. The respective governments were asked to design appropriate badges. Merchant ships and seafaring persons from colonies were only permitted to use the Red Ensign with a badge, then also named Civil Ensign, if permission has been given to the respective colony by the British admiralty, for Cyprus since 1922.

Between 1891 and 1905 the badge of Cyprus showed only the three letters CHC. They stood for "Cyprus High Commissioner". In 1905 was introduced a new badge. It shows two red lying leopards. This is the heraldry of the English King Richard the Lionheart, who conquered the island in 1191. On the flags this badge apeeared not until 1922 and was used until independence in 1960.

The coat of arms was introduced on 16th of August in 1960 on the occasion of the independence from Britain. It shows an orange shield with a white dove, which holds an olive branch in its beak. Below the dove appears the year 1960, the year of independence. The shield is framed by a wreath of olive branches.
The dove is the symbol of the goddess Aphrodite, which is to be born on the coast of Cyprus, and was worshiped in ancient times here very much. But it is also the symbol of peace, which should prevail between the Turkish and Greek Cypriots. The olive branches to the left and right of the coat of arms stand for agriculture and prosperity.
In 2012 the coat of arms was changed. The dove with the olive branch became a little bit stylized and the oil branches were adapted to the outline of the coat of arms. The colors are set with Pantone 144c for the orange and Pantone 336c for the green.

The island owes its name to the rich copper deposits that were already famous in antiquity. The word "Cyprus" comes from the Greek word for copper, "Kyprion". In Greek, it is now called "Kypria", in Turkish "Kibris".
