Meaning/Origin of the Flag

The flag of Armenia was introduced on 15th of June in 1919. It shows three horizontal stripes in red, blue and orange. Red stands for freedom and independence and for the blood, which was given in the fight for that, blue for the countryside and orange for the energy and the bravery of the people. Following other sources stands red the blood which was given in the fight for liberty, blue stands for the heaven and orange for the fertile soil of the country. Before 1919 was unofficially, and mainly at in exile living Armenians, a red-blue-green flag in use. As the Red Army in the April 1921 occupied the land, was inroduced for the Armenian Socialistic Soviet Republic a red flag with golden initials, and maintained in this form until the creation of the Trans Caucasian Federation under inclusion of Armenia in the year 1922. From 1922 till 1936, was additionally to use the flag of the Federation, as well a red flag. It was not dissimilar to the flag of Soviet Russia between 1918 and 1924. The star with hammer and sickle in it, was positioned in the leech of the flag, and in a semicircle around it the initials of the Federation. After the end of the federation Armenia joined the USSR, and undertook a flag, how used by all Soviet Republics from 1937, red flags with golden initials, added by hammer, sickle and star in gold. On 17th of December in 1952 was adoped a new flag with three horizontal stripes in proportion 3:2:3 in red, blue and red. In the leech, near the flagstaff, the flag showed in the upper red stripe hammer, sickle and star, again. On 24th of August in 1990 the flag from 1919 got reintroduced as national flag, and on 23rd of September in 1991 as official symbol of the state, again.

Meaning/Origin of the Coat of Arms

The current coat of arms of Armenia was introduced on 19th of April in 1992. It goes back to the coat of arms of the republic (1918–1922). The shield is divided into four in the colours red and blue and shows the heraldic symbols of the four royal houses of the Kingdom of Lesser Armenia in the fields: Artashesian, Arshakuni, Bagratuni and Rubinian. The golden central shield shows Mount Ararat with the contours of Noah's Ark. Shield holders are an eagle and a lion. They stand for the Armenian Apostolic Church and the royal house of the Bagratuni. An unlabeled ribbon, sword and chain (freedom struggle and independence), and a bundle of ears and a branch (creativity and peacefulness) serve as a pedestal.
