| Die Flagge der Azoren besteht aus zwei senkrechten Streifen in Blau und Weiß. Das dürfte seinen Ursprung darin haben, das die Anhänger von Königin Maria am 18.10.1830 auf den Azoren eine blau-weiße Flagge annahmen, die später die neue Nationalflagge von Portugal wurde, und bis 1911 galt. Die Azoren werden auch Habichtsinseln genannt, weswegen es sich bei der Vogeldarstellung um einen Habicht handelt. Die neun Sterne stehen für die neun Inseln, aus denen die Inselgruppe besteht. Das portugiesische Wappen in der Oberecke verweist auf die politische Zugehörigkeit. | The flag of the Azores
consits in two vertical stripes in blue an white. The reason may be in this that the followers of queen Maria adoped on 18th of October in 1830 on the Azores a blue-white flag which get later the new national flag of Portugal, until 1911. The Azores are named hawk-islands, too, because of this the bird-depiction is a hawk. The nine stars are standing for the nine islands constituting the Azores. The portugese coat of arms in the upper canton shows the political affiliation. |
