Origin of the Country's Name

"In the times of the Romans, the region was called Lucania. In the Middle Ages it was conquered by Byzantium, which set in a so-called Basilikós as head of the administration. The traditional name Lucania was revitalized in 1932 by Mussolini, since 1945 the region is officially called Basilicata. The terms Lucania / Lucan are used until today for the mountain range that pervades through the region."
