Meaning/Origin of the Flag

The flag of Rhineland-Palatinate was adoped in 1948. It shows the german tricolor, in the upper canton the coat of arms of the country. The coat of arms shows the heraldic symbols of the country-parts, the former election-principality Trier (red cross on white ground), the former election-principality Mainz (white wheel on red ground) and the Pfalz/Palatinate (golden lion on black ground). Over the blazon the "people's crown".

Meaning/Origin of the Coat of Arms

The coat of arms of Rhineland-Palatinate was introduced on 10th of May in 1948. It shows the heraldic symbols of the country-parts, the former election-principality Trier (red cross on white ground), the former election-principality Mainz (white wheel on red ground) and the Pfalz/Palatinate (golden lion on black ground). Over the blazon the "people's crown". The use of the coat of arms is reserved for offices and authorities of the country. The Rhineland-Palatinate Sign is available for private use. It can be used by everyone, but its not allowed to change it.

History

The country Rhineland-Palatinate was formed on 30th of August in 1947 by order of the allies from the southern part of the Prussian Rhine Province, the untill then to Bavaria belonging Palatinate and western rhenish territories of Hesse (Rhine Hesse).
