The flag of the People's State Reuss goes directly back to the flags of Reuss Senior Line and Reuss Junior Line. Both states used likewise a black-red-golden flag.

probable coat of arms of the People's State of Reuss
The people's state of Reuss will have continued the tradition of the coats of arms of the two parts of the country from which it originated (Reuss Senior Line und Reuss Junior Line), both used the same coat of arms. It shows in the lesser coat of arms the medieval heraldry of the Bailiffs of Weida (the Counts of Reuss), a golden lion with red claws, a red tongue and a red crown on a black shield. The middle coat of arms of the Reussian Estates shows on the shield a quartering and combination out of the lion's arms with a crane (Kranichfeld).
