| Die Inseln wurden 1535 zwar eher zufällig bei einem Schiffbruch entdeckt, jedoch nicht so schnell wiedergefunden, denn hier auftretende schwierige Strömungen und Winde ließen die Inseln auf Grund der ungenauen Navigation immer wieder "woanders" auftauchen. So wurden sie "Islas Encantadas", die "Verzauberten Inseln" genannt. Im 18. Jahrhundert kommt die Bezeichnung Galapagosinseln auf. Der Ursprung des Names ist schwer zu erklären, den übersetzt heißen sie "Milchzacken Inseln". Der Name ist griechischen Ursprungs und geht auf die Worte "gala" und "pagos" zurück: "Milch" und "Felszacken". Das ist über die Ansicht der mit Guano bedeckten Felsspitzen zu erklären, und so das Aussehen der Inseln beschreiben. | The islands were discovered in 1535 – although rather accidentally on the occasion of a shipwreck – but they had not been re-discovered so fast, because of the here occurring difficult currents and winds, the islands arised due to the inaccurate navigation "elsewhere". So they were called "Islas Encantadas", the "Enchanted Islands". In the 18th century the name Galápagos Islands became popular. The origin of the name is difficult to explain, the translation of the name means "Milk-Peak Islands".
