Bedeutung/Ursprung der Flagge – Meaning/Origin of the Flag:

The flag shows clearly the symbolism of the federal flag of Malaysia, what means the colours red, white and blue and the yellow half-moon with star, which has fourteen points.

In this way in to distinguish, that Kuala Lumpur is a federal territory of Malaysia, and not a federal element of that country.

On 26th of May in 2006 was additionally introduced a common flag for the three Malaysian federal territories. It shows three horizontal stripes in yellow, blue and red and in the middle of the blue stripe of the coat of arms with three stars below it, representing the three federal territories.

The colors of the flag are the colors of Malaysia, like they appear on the national flag of the country, but in a different arrangement.

In the times between 1912 and 1941 Labuan was an self-administrated British colony and used the relevant blue official flag (Blue Ensign).

In the flying end of the flag – like at all British colonies – the badge of the country. The badge of Labuan shows in the background the silhouette of the island and the behind rising sun and in the foreground a schooner.

On land, the individual citizen and also the authorities represented their status as citizens or organs of the British nation, embodied in the United Kingdom, through the use of the Union Jack, then called the "Union Flag".

At sea, the British citizen was thus provided with the British merchant flag, the Red Ensign. In a few cases, the citizens of a colony were allowed by the Admiralty to use their own Red Ensign with the colony's badge at sea.
