Meaning/Origin of the Flag

The today's flag od the Marshall Islands was introduced on 1st of May in 1979. It shows two diagonally passing stripes in orange and white on blue ground which widen to the right border. In the left upper corner a white star with four main points and twenty smaller points. The blue base colour symbolises the Pacific Ocean, the orange stands for the Ralik Islands and for courage, white for the Ratak Islands and for brightness, light and peace. The orange and white stripe points upwards and widens, which is supposed to mean increasing prosperity and joy of life on the islands. The star symbolises the Christian crucifix. The four main rays of the star are symbols for the four main islands, the twenty smaller ones represent the smaller islands. The flag was designed by Emlain Kabua, the wife of the country's then president. As the Marshall Islands still have been a part of the UN Trust Territory of the "Pacific Islands", so between 1947 and 1979, was hoisted here since 3rd of October in 1962 the flag of the UN Trust Territory. It was pale blue and showed six circular grouped white five-pointed stars. The blue stood for the UN and the six stars for the six administrative districts, the Pacific Islands consisted of. In the times as the Marshall Islands have been a German Colony there was no own flag for the country, but already before 1893 on some the islands were in use various styled black-white-red flags, either because of private initiatives of German merchants or even island's princes showed in this way their loyalty.
