Meaning/Origin of the Flag

The flag of the Mongolian Empire of the Timur shows a blue bunting with three silvery balls in it. Blue is the national colour of the Turks and Mongols respectively even of the Tatars. About the meaning of the balls is nothing known. Other sources show a differently designed version of the alleged flag, it is black and shows three balls in red, but in a different arrangement. Why 'alleged' flag? The Mongols were once almost all nomads. Even though they conquered a huge empire, they had a different idea of the state. The Great Khan, Khan, Sultan or Emir was the supreme commander and the army was constantly on the move. So in the beginning there were hardly any fixed residences. The state was where the army was. In this respect, it was not necessary to mark out a territory with flags, but at most to indicate the presence of the ruler. Otherwise, flags or standards only served as field signs and these were designed very differently. A common flag as a symbol of the state is inconceivable here and a personal standard of the ruler has not been handed down.

Numbers and Facts

The Mongol Timur (Timur Leng) – in Europe known as Tamerlan – was born in 1336 near the town Samarkand. He becomes a very capable army leader. In the year 1369 he submits some Turkish and Turkish-Mongol tribes in Middle Asia. He lead many dreadful conquests and created a huge Empire for himself. As first he conquered in the year 1379 the Staat of Choresm. Between the years 1380 and 1385 he submited Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia and the north of Iran. Because Timur descends not from the family the Dshingis Khan it was him not allowed to carry the title of a Khan and he named itself Sultan since the year 1388. Between 1388 and 1395 he counters the Empire of the Golden Horde, conquers Mesopotamia, Anatolia and North India, in 1401 the Empire of the Mamelucks, in 1402 the Ottoman Empire. After his death in the year 1405 near Chimkent disintegrates and decays his empire very fast under his children and grandsons. His descendants ruled in Iran until 1506 and in India by his geat-grandson Babur (on the mother’s side he is descended even from Dshingis Khan) until the year 1858.
