Flags are definitely a means of identification. One identifies himself, if at all, with his own country and hoists the national flag at the flagpole in his front yard. A picture you've become accustomed to, what you know. In second place is it perhaps the love ton a football or soccer club, which is also often expressed by a flag. But there are other identities that may be important to you: the country of origin of your ancestors, maybe placed in Germany. If your ancestors come, for example, from the Duchy of Brunswick or from the Prussian province of Pomerania, one can hardly hoist the city flag of Braunschweig, the flag of the today's state of Lower Saxony, or in the case of the Prussian province of Pomerania the Polish flag, because Pomerania is today placed in Poland. There are identities that go back further than in 1945. This is where the historical point of view comes into play, by hoisting an historical flag. Every descendant of German ancestors, who from Germany, used to belong to a municipality, country, county, duchy, abbey, principality, high abbey, electorate, or even kingdom. This is a memory that is actually preserved collectively, and has often an identity-creating effect, even in this modern globalized times. This is where the lover of the historical flags comes in, and sets an important sign at the mast or at the flagpole, visible to all, raising questions that one will always be happy to answer. You become a multiplier for history, a cultural ambassador. This also applies, of course, to the flags with the colours and the coats of arms of the Duchy of Styria (Steiermark), which can be bought or ordered here.
