Bedeutung/Ursprung der Flagge: Meaning/Origin of the Flag:
Trinidad war über viele Jahre hinweg eine spanische Kolonie. Im Jahre 1802 wurde sie von Spanien an   Großbritannien abgetreten. Trinidad war über viele Jahre hinweg eine spanische Kolonie. Im Jahre 1802 wurde sie von Spanien an   Großbritannien abgetreten.
Großbritannien hatte in Jahr 1864 ein Flaggensystem eingeführt, in dem:
  • Kriegsschiffe einen sogenannten "White Ensign" (Marineflagge),
    eine weiße Flagge oft mit durchgehendem roten Georgskreuz und mit dem Union Jack in der Oberecke,
  • Handelsschiffe einen "Red Ensign" (auch "Civil Ensign" => Bürgerflagge genannt, die eigentl. Handelsflagge), eine rote Flagge mit dem Union Jack in der Oberecke, und
  • Dienstschiffe einen "Blue Ensign" (Regierungsflagge => die eigentl. Staatsflagge),
    eine blaue Flagge mit dem Union Jack in der Oberecke führten.
Great Britain introduced a flag system in 1864 in which:
  • war ships fly the "White Ensign" (naval flag), a white flag often with an uninterrupted red St. George's-Cross and with the Union Jack in the upper staff quadrant of the flag,
  • merchant ships fly a "Red Ensign" (also named "Civil Ensign" => civil flag, the real merchant flag), a red flag with the Union Jack in the upper staff quadrant of the flag, and
  • governmental ships fly the "Blue Ensign" (flag for the use by the gouvernment => the actual state flag), a blue flag with the Union Jack in the upper staff quadrant of the flag.
Seit 1865 durften Schiffe von Kolonialregierungen einen Blue Ensign mit einem Badge (Abzeichen) im fliegenden Ende führen. Die jeweiligen Regierungen sollten entsprechene Bagdes zur Verfügung stellen. Since 1865 ships of colonial governments were permitted to fly the Blue Ensign with a badge in the flying end of the flag. The respective governments were asked to design appropriate badges.
Trinidad war bis 1889 eine eigenständig verwaltete britische Kolonie mit einer eigenen Flagge. Es wurde die übliche blaue Dienstflagge (Blue Ensign) verwendet. Im wehenden Teil der Flagge war, wie bei allen britischen Kolonien, das Badge (Abzeichen) des Landes plaziert. Trinidad had been a separate administered British colony with an own flag until 1889. There was used the usual blue official flag (Blue Ensign).
In the flying end of the flag was placed the badge of the country, like it was usual at all British colonies.

Bedeutung/Ursprung des Wappens: Meaning/Origin of the Coat of Arms:
Zwischen 1875 und 1889 zeigte das Badge von Trinidad auf einer Scheibe eine Hafen-Szenerie mit einem großen Segelschiff. Im unteren Teil der Scheibe das Motto der Kolonie: "Miscerique probat populus et foedera jungi" => "Es hat sich bewährt, die Völker zu mischen und sie in Einheit zu verbinden". The badge of Trinidad showed on a disk a harbor scenery with a big sailing ship between 1875 and 1889.
In the lower part of the disk the motto of the colony: "Miscerique probat populus et foedera jungi" => "It is proven to mix the peoples and bond them in unity".
