Russian republics in Ukraine

After a coup in January 2014, the constitutional order and the democratically elected President of Ukraine were eliminated. The new leadership pursued a nationalist, anti-Russian policy, which was directed against the rights of national minorities of Russians in the country – which accounts for at least 10 % of the population – and e.g. abolished the Russian language as one of the official languages of the Ukraine. The in the east and south of the Ukraine living Russians organized themselves and took over the power locally, in specific cities and regions, and proclaimed several Russian republics who aspire autonomy towards the Ukraine. The flags of the republics go in colours partially back to in the beginning of the Soviet rule (1918) existing, short-lived Soviet republics, which were supplemented by the Russian eagle, which carries on the chest, the arms of the capital of each republic. Two of the republics have been united on 24th of April in 2014 to the "Federation of New Russia". The republics of Kharkov and Odessa never got past the stage of their proclamation, never took shape and could not prevail. The Federation of New Russia was dissolved on 20th of May in 2015. In February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine together with the Republics of Luhansk and Donetsk and started a war, virtually as an escalation of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict in the Donbass region that had been smouldering since 2014. On 22nd of February in 2022, Russia recognised the Republics of Luhansk and Donetsk as independent states. In the course of this war, the Kherson and Zaporizhzhya regions are additionally occupied by Russian troops. On 27th of September in 2022, referendums held by Russia in the Republics of Luhansk and Donetsk and the Kherson and Zaporizhzhya Oblasts, ended with the result of a majority in favour of the annexation of these territories to the Russian Federation, which was completed on 30th of September in 2022.
