Bedeutung/Ursprung der Flagge: Meaning/Origin of the Flag:
Die Flagge von Alabama wurde am 16.02.1895 eingeführt. Sie zeigt ein weißes Flaggentuch mit einem roten Diagonalkreuz (Andreaskreuz). Die Gestaltung der Flagge soll wahrscheinlich an die Battle-Flag der Armee von Nord-Virginia der Konföderierten Staaten (CSA) erinnern, denn sie wurde unter der Regierung von Gouverneur William Oates geschaffen. Oates war ein ehemaliger Regimentskommandeur der Armee von Nord-Virginia. Die erste Flagge Alabamas wurde anlässlich der Unabhängigkeit von den USA am 11.01.1861 gehisst. Sie ging auf eine Privatinitiative zurück und wehte nur für ein paar Wochen. Sie war einfarbig blau und zeigte in der Mitte die allegorische Figur der Freiheit mit einem Schwert in der Hand, darüber das Motto: "Independent now and forever" → "Unabhängig jetzt und für immer". Während des Bürgerkrieges wurde angeblich eine einfarbige blaue Flagge mit einem goldenen Stern in der Mitte verwendet. The flag of Alabama was introduced on 16th of February in 1895. It shows a white bunting with a red diagonal cross (St. Andrew's cross).
The design of the flag is probably reminiscent of the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia of the Confederate States (CSA), as it was created under the administration of Governor William Oates. Oates was a former regimental commander of the Army of Northern Virginia.

Alabama's first flag was raised on the occasion of independence from the USA on 11th of January in 1861. It was the result of a private initiative and only flew for a few weeks. It was plain blue and showed the allegorical figure of freedom with a sword in its hand in the centre, above which was the motto: "Independent now and forever". During the Civil War, a single-coloured blue flag with a gold star in the middle was allegedly used.

Ursprung des Landesnamens: Origin of the Country's Name:
Der Name "Alabama" hat seine Wurzeln in der Sprache der einst im Süden des Landes lebenden Muskogee-Indianer und bedeutet "Siedlung des Stammes". Es geht auf den Spruch "alibamo" zurück, was übersetzt heißt: "hier bleiben wir". The name "Alabama" has its roots in the language of the once in south of the country living Muskogee Indians and means "settlement of the tribe". It goes back to the saying "alibamo"  which means translated "we stay here".
