Die Flagge von Maryland ist eine viergeteilte Wappenflagge und zeigt die Heraldik des Wappenschilds von Maryland. Es sind die Wappen der Familie der ehemaligen Besitzer der britischen Kolonie. Sir George Calvert, der Lord of Baltimore, hat sein Wappen im Jahre 1622 verliehen bekommen. Es zeigt senkrechte schwarze und goldene Streifen, die durch einen Diagonalstreifen in den gleichen Farben farblich umgekehrt werden. Er wurde 1624 Lord von Baltimore (Irland). Sein erstgeborener Sohn Cecil, zweiter Lord von Baltimore, gründete 1634 die Kolonie Maryland. Cecil Calvert und sein Bruder Leonhard betimmten als Wappen der Kolonie ein Wappen, das die heraldischen Elemente der Calverts mit denen der Familie ihrer Großmutter, den Crosslands, verband. | The flag of Maryland is
a quartered scutcheon flag and shows the heraldry of the blazon of Maryland. This are the
emblems of the family of the former owners of the British colony. Sir George Calvert, the
Lord of Baltimore, has been awarded its crest in 1622. It shows black and gold vertical
stripes, which reverse in colours by a diagonal stripe in the same colors. In 1624 he became Lord of Baltimore (Ireland). His eldest son, Cecil, the second Lord of Baltimore, founded in 1634 the colony of Maryland. Cecil Calvert and his brother Leonard adopted as coat of arms of the colony, the heraldic elements of the family of Calvert with them of the family of their grandmother, the Crosslands. |

Sie verwendeten als Erkennungszeichen das rot-weiße Kreuz der Crosslands, oft auch Flaggen der CSA die um das Wappen von Maryland ergänzt wurden. | In the Civil War Maryland was occupied by troops of the Union (USA), Annapolis and Baltimore came under martial law. Many Marylanders fled across the Potomac to the troops of the Confederation (CSA).
