Bedeutung/Ursprung der Flagge: Meaning/Origin of the Flag:

The current state flag of Michigan, was introduced on 1st of August in 1911. It shows a blue bunting and on it the national emblem.

The coat of arms is from 1832 and shows a man standing on a peninsula, he lifts his right arm (peace signal) and holds a rifle in his left hand (signal for readiness to defend). Above the motto: "Tuebor => I will defend". The shield is held by a moose and a wapiti. They stand for the wildlife of the country. Above the escutcheon the bald eagle and a red banner with the motto: "E pluribus unum", both references to the United States. Below the escutcheon a white banner with the motto of Michigan: "Si quaeris peninsulam amoenam, circumspice => If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look around you."

The sate flag may be used by anyone. A identical flag had already been introduced in 1837 for military purposes.
