Bedeutung/Ursprung der Flagge: Meaning/Origin of the Flag:

The current flag of Mississippi was introduced on 3rd of November in 2020. It shows in its middle a magnolia blossom, around it a circle of stars and the words: "In God We Trust". With the resignation of Mississippi from the United States on 9th of January in 1861 was first hoisted its own state flag. It showed a single-coloured blue bunting with a white five-pointed star in the middle. Although this flag was officially replaced after just two and a half weeks by another model, and it became very popular as "Bonnie Blue Flag" and is still widespread. It goes back to the flag of the former Republic of West Florida. On 26th of January in 1861, a new flag was officially introduced as the state flag. It showed a plain white bunting, a square blue upper corner with a white five-pointed star (Bonnie Blue) and at the flying end of a vertical red stripe and in the middle a magnolia tree. On 7th of February in 1894 a new flag was adoped. It shows three horizontal stripes in blue, white and red, and in the upper corner the square battle flag of the Confederate States of America (CSA). Blue, white and red are the colors of France, the former colonial power, and the war flag of the CSA identified the country as a former member of the Confederation.

Ursprung des Landesnamens: Origin of the Country's Name:

The name "Mississippi" comes from the Indian name of the river with the same name. It means translated "Father of Waters", according to another translation only "Big River".
