Bedeutung/Ursprung der Flagge: | Meaning/Origin of the Flag: |
| The flag of North
Dakota was introduced on 3rd of March in 1911. It shows a plain blue bunting and in the
middle elements of the emblem of the United States: a soaring bald eagle with an olive
branch and a bundle of arrows in its talons. It holds in his beak, a red banner with the
state motto of the United States: "E pluribus unum" => "One out of
many." Above the eagle, a stylized rising sun and thirteen white stars. They stand for the thirteen founding colonies of the United States. Below the eagle, a red banner with the name of the country in golden letters. |
| The flag dates back to the flag of the First North Dakota Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army, which was used in the Spanish-US-American War in 1898, however without the red banner with the name of the country. |
