Bedeutung/Ursprung der Flagge: | Meaning/Origin of the Flag: |
| The current flag of South Carolina was adopted on 28th of January in 1861 as a result of withdrawal from the United States. It shows a blue bunting, on it a silver palm tree and in the upper canton a silvery crescent. |
| The predecessors of the modern flag are also associated with the withdrawal of South Carolina from the U.S. (20th of December 1860). Even before the withdrawal, during the year 1860, arised the "South Carolina Sovereignty Flag", a red flag with a blue cross, in the upper corner appeare a crescent and a palms tree in silver, and in the bars of the cross were placed thirteen white stars, a hint for the thirteen founding colonies of the USA. |
| On 26th of January in
1861 (over a month after the leaving of the U.S.), the first official state flag was
adopted. It showed (similar to the today's model), a blue bunting with a crescent in the upper corner, but in the middle was placed a white oval on end with a golden palm tree in it. It blew only for three days, on 28th of January in 1861, the current flag was adopted. |
| The crescent was set in
the upper corner of a blue flag (with the inscription "Liberty" inside the moon)
by Colonel Moultrie in 1775 during the Independence War against Britain (17751783),
on the occasion of the capture of Fort Johnson . His troops wore blue uniforms and
crescents on their caps. Apparently it was originally not been intended as a crescent, but a silver collar, which was worn as a part of old uniforms on a chain around the neck. This explains the inscription even better, but a moon with an inscription is very, very unusual. |
| The palm treee appears
among others in the state seal of South Carolina. It also has its roots in the
Independence War against Britain. The palm tree became to a symbol of freedom, yes, even a symbol of the State of South Carolina, because the fully from palm trunks built Fort Sullivan on Charleston Island was able to defy victorious an attack of the British fleet in 1776. |

Anmerkungen: | Remarks: |
| On March 15th in 1776, South Carolina declared itself as the first colony to be independent from Great Britain, and on March 26th in 1776, the congress of South Carolina proclaimed the new constitution of the independent state of South Carolina. In this short period of time, the congress of South Carolina elected J. Rutledge for president of the country. The designation was changed to "governor" after the founding of the USA because the term "president" was reserved for the head of the USA. The colonies first declared themselves
individually independent of the United Kingdom and then
individually for sovereign, and then, on July th in 1776 collectively as the "United States of America". Just as from 1860, when thirteen states left the USA individually, each afterwards, and only then, after a short time, joined together in a new confederation, the Confederate States of America. The "South Carolina Sovereignty Flag" does not have thirteen, but fifteen stars, the southern slave states of Maryland and Delaware had been also represented. Obviously this was the very first flag that showed the crescent moon and palmetto tree together. |

Ursprung des Landesnamens: | Origin of the Country's Name: |
| The name "Carolina" (initially Carolana) was given in 1619 to the the land by Sir Robert Heath in honor of King Charles I., out of the Latin form of the name, namely "Carolus". In 1710 the land was divided in North Carolina and South Carolina. |
(Charles) benannten. | According to other sources, already the French brought the name to the country in 1562, as they named it in honor of their King Charles IX. |
