Bedeutung/Ursprung der Flagge:	Meaning/Origin of the Flag:
Die heutige Flagge von Tennessee wurde am 17.04.1905 eingeführt. Sie zeigt ein einfarbig rotes Grundtuch und am wehenden Ende der Flagge einen schmalen senkrechten blauen Streifen der durch einen dünnen weißen Streifen von der roten Fläche getrennt ist. In der Mitte der roten Fläche ist eine weißumrandete blaue Scheibe platziert, in ihr drei weiße fünfzackige Sterne.	The current flag of Tennessee was introduced on 17th of April in 1905. It shows a monochromatic red bunting and at the end of the waving part of the flag a narrow vertical blue stripe, separated by a thin white stripe from the red area. In the middle of the red area is placed a white bordered blue disc and in it three white five-pointed stars.
Die Flagge soll in ihrem Design an die Flagge der Konföderierten Staaten von Amerika (CSA) erinnern. Die Farben Blau, Weiß und Rot sind die Nationalfarben der CSA, aber auch der USA. Die drei Sterne erinnern daran, dass Tennessee im Jahre 1796 als dritter neuer Staat der Union der dreizehn Gründerkolonien der USA beigetreten ist (somit eigentlich der sechzehnte Staat), und sie repräsentieren die drei geographischen Regionen des Landes (Ost-, Mittel- und Westtennessee). Blau steht für Idealismus, Weiß für Reinheit und Rot für Tennessee selbst und seine ruhmreiche Geschichte. Der Kreis in der Mitte steht für die Einheit.	The flag should remember with its design the flag of the Confederate States of America (CSA). The colors blue, white and red are the national colors of the CSA, but also the United States. The three stars point out that Tennessee joined in 1796 as the third new state to the Union of the thirteen founding colonies of the U.S. (thus in effect the sixteenth state), and they represent the three geographical regions (eastern, central and western Tennessee). Blue stands for idealism, white for purity and red for Tennessee and its own glorious history. The circle in the middle stands for unity.
Am 01.05.1897 war bereits eine Staatsflagge eingeführt worden. Sie zeigte drei schräge Streifen in Rot, Blau und Weiß. Im blauen Feld stand in Gold der Spitzname des Landes: "The Volunteer State". Er geht auf die zahlreichen Freiwilligen Kämpfer des Unabhängigkeitskrieges gegen Großbritannien zurück. Im weißen Feld der Flagge, am wehenden Ende, war eine blaue "16" platziert. Sie erinnerte daran, dass Tennessee im Jahre 1796 als sechzehnter Staat der USA beigetreten ist.	On 1st of May in 1897 was already introduced a national flag. It showed three diagonal stripes in red, blue and white. In the blue field was placed the nickname of the country in gold: "The Volunteer State". It goes back to the many volunteers fighters of the Revolutionary War against Britain. In the white field of the flag, at the waving end, appeared a blue "16". It pointed out that Tennessee joined in 1796 as the sixteenth state of the USA.
Mit dem Austritt aus den USA am 16.05.1861, und dem Beitritt zur CSA am 24.07.1861 sollte eine erste eigene Flagge eingeführt werden. Aber das Land wurde fast sofort in die Kämpfe des Bürgerkrieges verwickelt, und bis Mitte 1862 waren zwei Drittel das Landes von den Nordstaaten besetzt, so das es nicht mehr zur Einführung der Flagge kam. Sie sollte in ihrem Aussehen an die "Stars-and-Bars"-Flagge der Konföderation erinnern, jedoch sollte in der blauen Oberecke das Staatssiegel von Tennessee platziert werden.	With the withdrawal from the United States on 16th of May in 1861, and the accession to the CSA on 24th of July in 1861 should be introduced a first own flag. But the country was almost immediately embroiled in the battles of the Civil War, and until the middle of the year 1862 two thirds of the country were occupied by the northern states, so it is no longer imposing the flag came. It should remember in their appearance on the "Stars and Bars" flag of the Confederacy, but in the blue upper corner should be placed the state seal of Tennessee.

Zum Ursprung des Namens "Tennessee" gibt es zwei Theorien: A) Der Name "Tennessee" kommt von dem indianischen Cherookee-Wort "Tanasi", was der Name einer einzigen Indianersiedlung am Little Tennessee River gewesen sein soll. B) Das Wort "Tanasi" entstammt der Sprache der Cherookee und bedeutet "Siedlungen am Fluss", ein Wort mit dem die Cherookee alle ihre Dörfer am Little Tennessee River bezeichneten, der Name ging dann auf den Fluss, später auf das ganze Land über.	The origin of the name "Tennessee" knows two theories: A) The name "Tennessee" comes from the native Indian Cherookee word "Tanasie" what has been the name of a single Indian settlement on the Little Tennessee River. B) The word "Tanasie" comes from the language of Cherookee, meaning "settlement on the River", a word with which the Cherookee called all their villages on the Little Tennessee River, the name was transfered to the river, later to the whole country.
