Bedeutung/Ursprung der Flagge: | Meaning/Origin of the Flag: |
| The today's flag of
Virginia was introduced on 30th of April in 1861, in consequence of the withdrawal from
the United States (Sezession) on 17th of April in 1861. It shows a single-coloured blue
bunting with the seal of the country in the middle. The seal dates from 1776. It shows an
allegorical scene in which a greek-dressed woman (the freedom, Virginia itself) set her
foot triumphantly on the breast of a roman-dressed man lying on the ground. Behind the
man's head appears a golden crown. He stands for tyranny, or even for the English King
George III. Below the scene the country's motto: "Sic semper tyrannis" =>
"This always happens to tyrants." The seal is surrounded by a wreath of laurel
leafs. Over the years, the seal remained virtually unchanged. Rare changes were made in a
few details such as in the laurel wreath or on the clothing of the "Virginia",
sometimes the breast was decently covered, sometimes was not, sometimes the flag had
fringes, sometimes not. |
