Ursprung des Landesnamens: | Origin of the Country's Name: |
| The name of the country goes back to the word "ouiskonsin" of the the Miami-Illinois Indians. The word means translated "Place of the Beavers" and referres to the today's river Wisconsin. The French took over the word for the whole region and it has been maintained until today. According to other sources is the translation of the word "lying on red", which refers to the sandstone in the river bed of the river Wisconsin. |
