Bedeutung/Ursprung der Flagge: | Meaning/Origin of the Flag: |
| The flag of Central
Africa was first and officially hoisted on 1st of December in 1958, on the occasion of the
achievement of autonomy (day of the declaration of autonomy). It shows four horizontal stripes in blue, white, green and yellow, and in the middle a vertical red stripe. In the upper corner, in the blue stripe, on the mast, is placed a golden five-pointed star. |
| The flag combines the
pan-African colours (green, yellow, red) with the colors of France (blue, white, red), and
should symbolize in this way the bond between Africa and Europe, and the desire of Central
Africa to remain in close contact with France. The yellow star in the upper corner is the star of independence, it also symbolizes the unity. |
| The flag is attributed to the Prince Barthelemy Boganda. He wanted to unite politically whole Equatorial Africa in a kind of federation and to lean against France. Therefore the yellow star in the flag stands too. |
| The design of the flag recalls that the people belonging to different races, although bond and connected by the common blood (the vertical red stripe). |
| Blue stands for liberty, white for equality and purity, green represents the hope and the forest dwellers, yellow for tolerance and for the savanna residents. |
| From 1976 to 1979
Central Africa was an empire. However, the flag continued unchanged under Emperor Bokassa.
His personal flag was single-cloured green and showed a large golden sun with a golden eagle in the center. |
| The colours green,
yellow and red are the Pan-African colours. The Pan-African-Movement had its beginnings
perhaps in 1900, which wants to emphasize the common goals of all black people. The colour-triad green-yellow-red, which are used by many African and even American countries in their flags after independence, stands for the political unity of Africa, of all black People. The first country was Ghana in 1957. As the origin, the colours of Ethiopia (Abessinia), the oldest independent state in Africa, apply. |
