Bedeutung/Ursprung der Flagge – Meaning/Origin of the Flag:
Die Flagge der Åland-Inseln wurde am 07.04.1954 angenommen. Sie zeigt ein gelb umrandetes rotes skandinavisches Kreuz (= ein Kreuz, das zur Stangenseite hin verschoben ist – alle skandinavischen Länder haben zum Zeichen der Verwandtschaft und Zusammengehörigkeit ein solches Kreuz in ihren Flaggen) auf blauem Grund. Die Flagge vereinigt die Farben der Flaggen bzw. Wappen von Finnland und Schweden. So ist deutlich die schwedische Flagge mit einem aufgelegten roten Kreuz (das finnische Wappen ist rot) zu erkennen. The flag of the Aaland Islands was adoped on the 7th of April 1954. It shows a yellow bordered red Scandinavian cross (= a cross, displaced to the pole-side – all scandinavian countries have as a sign of relationships and togetherness such a cross in their flags) on blue ground. The flag unites the colours of the flags and coats of arms of Finland and Sweden respectively. This way the Swedish yellow cross is easily indentified with the red Finnish red cross as an overlay (the Finnish coat of arms is red).
