There are two handed down for the Mughal Empire from different sources. The flag of the first Mughal, Zahir ud-Din Muhammad, known as Babur, is a combination of two red and a yellow triangle. However, the origin is considered unsafe, and it is probably a legend. The flag of the later Mughal Empire did really exist. It showed a golden lion with a sun on a green background with a red outer border. There probably existed various forms of this flag, but this was at that time without uniform rules absolutely normal. So a triangular version or also a square version with two or three dovetails.

The Mughal Empire arised when Zahir ud-Din Muhammad, known as Babur, coming from Kabul conquered the Sultanate of Delhi in 1526. Babur descended from a Timurid dynasty, which goes over the father back to Timur Lenk, and over the mother even back to Genghis Khan. This dynasty is called Mogul or Mughal. The word is as 'mughul' of Persian origin and means 'Mongol'. In the 17th century there was a potent territorial expansion, in the 18th century starts a gradual decline. Until 1784 the Mughal Empire shrank to a region of 200 kilometers around Delhi Town. The last Mughal emperor was deposed in 1858 by the British and the country became connected to British India.
