The Huns of that Hun Empire – it existed long before the time of the migration of peoples and the famous Hun King Attila – were probably a tribal federation comprising Turkic and Mongolian groups. The empire was founded by Teoman and later spread rapidly under his son Mete and his successors, reaching a size that encompassed present-day Manchuria, Mongolia, East Turkestan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and the south of what is now the Asian part of Russia. The residence was Ötüken. It was the military activities of these Huns that prompted the Chinese to build the Great Wall of China. Due to internal turmoil, the empire began to disintegrate into several sub-empires around 100 B.C. and was finally crushed by the Chinese, who wanted to secure the Silk Road.
