History

Antiquity · settlement of the region from southern Arabia, evolution of the people of Tigray, probably by mixture of Arabs and Kushits

1st to 5th century · the today’s Tigray is the heart of the Aksumitian Empire

13th to 20th century · the today’s Tigray belongs to the Empire of Ethiopia, thereby development of the historic province of Tigre

1935–1941 · Ethiopia is an Italian colony

1974 · overthrow of the Ethiopian emperor, establishment of a socialistic military dictatorship, in Tigray resistance by the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF)

1991 · overthrow of the socialistic military dictatorship in Ethiopia by the TPLF and troops from Eritrea

1995 · administrative reform, elimination of the historic Ethiopian provinces (and in this way of Tigre), formation of ethnic structured provinces (regional states), foundation of the today's Tigray

Origin of the Country's Name

The name "Tigray" has its roots in the here living christian people of the Tigray. Former the country was called Tigre. But there is also a "Tigre" people, who are predominantly Muslims, who live in Eritrea and Sudan. This can easily be confused.
