Source, by: Wikipedia (D)

The flag of Abruzzo is single-coloured red and shows in the middle the coat of arms of the region. This shows a golden bordered, threefold left divided shield, white over green over blue. The origin of the arms is not known. It is probably a new creation, because the color white stands for the snow-covered mountains, green for the hills and blue for the nearby situated sea.

The name "Abruzzo" is the name of a landscape in the central Italian Apennine Mountains. It was awarded by the Romans and goes probably back to the word "aper" or even "abruptus". The first means "boar", the second "steep".
