Antwerp

(German: Antwerpen, Flemish: Antwerpen, French: Anvers)

Area: 1.107 sq. mi.
Inhabitants: 1.857.986 (2019)
Capital: Antwerp

The province of Antwerp consists of central territories of the former Duchy of Brabant and the north of the former Diocese of Liège. In the unofficial scutcheon-flag of the province that is not reflected. This flag shows regional heraldry, to the left the heraldry of the Margrave County of Antwerp: a silvery castle on red (City of Antwerp), above the eagle of the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation, on the right the heraldry of Mechelen, three red poles on gold with the crest of the empire, and in the bottom the heraldry of Turnhout, a blue pile on silver. The in 1997 adopted official flag of the Province of North Brabant is reminiscent to the flag of the Dutch Province of North Brabant and shows 24 fields, but in gold, white and blue, a combination of the colors of Antwerp (white and red), Mechelen (Red and Gold) and Turnhout (Blue and White). In the between 1928 and 1997 used flag with the three vertical stripes the blue was missing.

Limburg

(Flemish: Limburg, French: Limbourg)

Area: 935 sq. mi.
Inhabitants: 874.048 (2019)
Capital: Hasselt

The Province of Limburg consits of territories of the former County of Loon and the former Duchy of Limburg. This is reflected in the in 1996 introduced flag of the Province of Limburg. That shows in principle the Heraldry of the Duchy of Limburg, a red, two-tailed lion on silver, but with a central shield. This is the coat of arms of the County of Loon. There is still in use an unofficial version, which dates back to before 1996, in which the central shield lacks and goes in this way back to the flag of the Duchy. The Duchy of Limburg became in 1355 a possession of Luxembourg, in 1406 a Burgundian possession and came in 1555 as heir to the House of Habsburg. The County of Loon became in 1366 a part of the Diocese of Liege.

East Flanders

(German: Ostflandern, Flemish: Oost-Vlaanderen, French: Flandre-Orientale)

Area: 1.151 sq. mi.
Inhabitants: 1.515.064 (2019)
Capital: Gent (French: Gand)

The Province of East Flanders consists of the eastern territories of the former County of Flanders. This is only reflected by the black lion on the in 1998 introduced flag of the Province of East Flanders, which is from the historical yellow flag of Flanders. The flag of the Province of East Flanders shows a green bunting with four white stripes. One of them is four times wider as the others. The colour green stands for the landscape and the stripes for the four great rivers of the region: Scheldt (Escaut), Lys, Dender (Dendre) and Durme. The green flag appers some unauthentic, therefore it is in practice often used the historical flag of Flanders for private purposes. For informations about Flanders and its history => click here.

Area: 1.214 sq. mi.
Inhabitants: 1.195.796 (2019)
Capital: Bruges (Flemish: Brugge, French: Bruges, German: Brügge)

The province of West Flanders consists of the central territories of the former County of Flanders. This is reflected in the in 1997 introduced flag. It shows the emblem of the old County of Flanders, as it was known to the 15th century: yellow and blue gyronny, with a red heart-shield. Probably under the rule of the Habsburgs (since 1482), the county of Flanders was handed over a new coat of arms. It showed a black, red armored lion on gold, a symbolism that is still very common and widely known, not least as the symbol of Flanders as a federal unit of the today's Belgium. Therefore, in West Flanders are oftenly used unofficial flags (often square), which show both arms like they appearin crest in the Province of West Flanders. Namur

(German: Namur, Flemish: Namen, French: Namur, Walloon: Nameur)

Area: 1.415 sq. mi.
Inhabitants: 494.325 (2019)
Capital: Namur

The Province of Namur is much larger than the territories of the historic County of Namur, added by the southern territories of the former Diocese of Liège. The in 1953 introduced flag of the province shows the colors black and red. They may originate from the historical coat of arms of the County of Namur (a black lion and a red diagonal bar). The old scutcheon-flag was probably abolished because of its Flemish appearance. Ostensibly it is still unofficially and occasionally in use.
