Meaning/Origin of the Flag

There is no flag of the Ogaden in this sense. The inhabitants are Somali, some of whom do not feel connected to Ethiopia but to Somalia or even strive for a unified state of all Somalis. This led to an armed underground struggle as early as 1960, initially supported by the WSLF, which sought to annex the region to Somalia. From 1980, it lost influence under Ethiopian military pressure. From its remnants, the ONLF was founded in 1984, which today strives for a kind of state independence of the Odagen, not least because of the disastrous political situation in Somalia. The flag of ONLF shows three stripes in green, pale blue and red with a white five-pointet star in the middle of the pale blue stripe. In this way that flag combines the colours of Somalia (white star on pale blue ground) and the WSLF (green and red). The star of Somalia symbolizes by its five points those countries in which Somali-People lived in the times of the foundation of the State of Somalia (Ogaden, Somaliland, Somalia, Djibouti, North East Kenya). It expresses a demand for reunification which however lost his power since the collapse of Somalia. The Western Somalia Liberation Front (WSLF) used obviously different styled flags, respectively its design is changed very often. Very frequent were the colours green and red and the white star. There are known even combinations in blue/red or black/red.
