The flag of Arkansas was introduced on 26th of February in 1923. It shows a red bunting with a white diamond in the middle with a blue border. There are 25 white stars in the blue border of the diamond. Inside the diamond is placed the name of the country and four blue stars. The design of the flag is reminiscent of the Battle Flag of the Southern States (CSA). The 25 white stars stand for the fact that Arkansas was the 25th state to join the USA. The number of blue stars was initially three, but was increased to four in 1923. The blue stars represent the Confederate States of America (CSA), Spain, France and the USA, countries to which Arkansas belonged or still belongs. The colours of the flag were not originally defined, but in 2011 it was decided with Law 1205 that the colours used in the flag of the USA should be used.
1861–1865 · civil war: the north and the southwest of Arkansas will be invaded by troops of the United States to 1864
9th of April in 1865 · General Lee surrenders at Appomattox (Virginia) as commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, the other CSA Armies capitulate gradually until July 1865
1865–1877 · "Reconstruction", forced return of the CSA states in the USA
There are two theories about the origin of the name Arkansas:
1) The name comes from the vocabulary of the Quapaw Indians and translates as "land of the downriver people"
2) The name comes (like the word Kansas) from the vocabulary of the Sioux Indians and translates as "people of the south wind". Its French pronunciation ("Arkensor") officially became the state name in 1881.
