Meaning/Origin of the Flag

This is the flag of the Mon State Party (NMSP) and its armed arm, the Mon National Liberation Army New (MNLA), an organisation that seeks a state independent of Burma. It is about 3.000 fighters strong. The flag is called the "flag of the flying golden dragon".

6th cent. · establishment of the Mon State of Dvaravati in parts of the today's Burma and the North of Thailand

11th cent. · conquest of Dvaravati by the Khmer, escape of a lot of Mon in the remaining area of the Mon State on the other side of the Taungdan Mountains in the mouth plateau of the Salween River with the capital Thaton

1057 · conquest of the Mon State of Thaton by the Burmese

13th cent. · establishment of the Mon State of Pegu

16th cent. · the Empire of Pegu becomes dependent from Burma

1757 · conquest of the Mon State by Burma, escape of lots of Mon over the Taungdan Mountains to Siam (Thailand)

1852–1854 · conquest of Southern Burma (and in this way of the Mon Country) by United Kingdom, return of many Mon from Siam (Thailand), support of the British by the Mon at the conquest of the remaining Burma (until 1886), promise of self-administration and sovereignty by the British
