Meaning/Origin of the Flag

The flag was introduded in 1960, and shows – in a dynamic arrangement – the colors blue, white and red, so the colors of the USA. The bunting is blue, with a white triangle, which it's base has on the flying end of the flag, and it reaches out to the leech. It is bordered on two sides with a red border. A brown-white, attacking, American white head eagle holds in his claws a baton and a war bludgeon, it flys in the direction of the flagpole. Baton and bludgeon are traditional Samoan symbols of authority. Between 1900 and 1960 the flag of the USA was used.

Meaning/Origin of the Coat of Arms

The coat of arms of American Samoa is actually an in black and white coloured seal. It shows symbols of Samoan mythology and culture. The two crossed objects in the foreground (symbol of wisdom and a ceremonial baton) stand for the dignity of the country, in the middle nearby, a kava bowl. The motto of the country (at the bottom) is: "SAMOA MUAMUA LE ATUA" → "Samoa, may God be the first". At the top is written: "SEAL OF AMERICAN SAMOA 17 April 1900".

Origin of the Country's Name

The meaning of the word "Samoa" is not known. The Europeans called them "Bauman Islands" or "Navigator Islands". After the colonial division, there was an Eastern Samoa (American Samoa) and a Western Samoa. Western Samoa became independent in 1962 and calls itself only "Samoa" since 1997.
