The today's flag of Georgia was introduced on 14th of January in 2004 in context with a change of government. It should better shows the christian history of the country, because cross-flags have a long tradition in Georgia. The today's variant with the five crosses should have been in use to the 15th century. When Georgia became independent from Russia in the year 1918 was introduced a single coloured dark red flag which additionally showed in the upper canton two horizontal stripes in black and white. The dark red stood for the glorious history of the land and the black for the hard times under the russian rule. The white represented the desire for a stable peace. The flag was created by Jacob Nicoladse. When the Red Army in 1921 occupied the country, was inroduced for the Georgian Socialistic Soviet Republic a red flag with golden Georgian initials, and itw as maintained in this form until the creation of the Trans Caucasian Federation under inclusion of Georgia in the year 1922. From 1922 to 1936 was in use the flag of the Federation, also a red flag. It was not dissimilar to the flag of Soviet Russia between 1918 and 1924. The star with hammer and sickle in it, was positioned in the leech of the flag, and in a semicircle around it the initials of the federation. After the end of the federation Georgia joined the USSR, and adoped a flag, how used by all Soviet Republics from 1937, red flags with golden initials. On 11th of April in 1951 was adoped a new flag. It was single coloured red, but however, somehow uncommon designed for soviet conditions, because it showed a blue sun in the upper canton and in its middle were placed hammer, sickle and star in red. Furthermore arised within the upper half of the flag a horizontal blue stripe, which should symbolize the cloudless and blue heaven of Georgia. On 18th of November in 1990 the flag from 1918 was reintroduced as national flag. The dark red was usually very different, from pale red over crimson to brown. In 2004, the today's model was adopted. The color red is defined with Pantone 186.

The today's coat of arms of Georgia was introduced on 1st of October in 2004. It goes back to the medieval coat of arms of the Georgian dynasty of the Bagratides. The greater coat shows shows a red shield with Saint George in the middle, which defeats a silver dragon with a silver spear. Saint George is Georgia's patron saint. Above the shield the Georgian-Iberian crown, supporters are two golden lions. Under the shield a banner with the national motto in Georgian: "dsala ertobashia", translated: "power by unity".

The name of the country is a medieval European falsification of the Persian name of the country: "Gurdchi". Also the Russian name of the country "Grusinia" goes back to it. In Polish the country is called "Gruzja". The Georgians themselves call their country "Sakartvelo".
