The today’s flag of Chechenia was introduced on 25th of May in 2004. It has a format of 2:3 and shows three horizontal stripes in green, white and red, but the white stripe is only a slender separating stripe between the biger, upper, green and the, smaller lower red stripe. At the pole a vertical white stripe with a golden ornament. The design of the flag distinguishes fundamentally (except the used colours) from the to 2004 used flag. Obviously it was introduced to demonstrate the liaison with Russia, in difference to the until today active rebels, which use furtherly the old flag or variations of it. The flag of Chechnya, which was used until 2004, was introduced in 1991, probably on the occasion of the declaration of independence from Russia. It was a rectangular green bunting with an aspect ratio of 7:11. In the lower part of the flag there were three stripes of white, red and white, each one tenth the height of the flag wide. These three stripes were separated from the lower edge of the flag bunting by a green stripe of equal width. Green stood for Islam, red for the blood shed for freedom and white stood for the path to a hopeful future. At the very beginning, this flag had the ratio of 1:2 that was common in Soviet times. Chechnya was united with Ingushetia for many years. As the common Chechen Ingushetic Autonomous Soviet Republic, the country had some flags, following the always same Soviet knitting pattern. Only from 1942 to 1944 was an other flag in use, when the country broke with the Soviet Union in World War II and defected to the side of the German Empire. The flags, which were used in the Soviet era corresponded all to the same pattern as it was intended for the Soviet Autonomous Republics: Between 1923 and 1937 frequently only a single-coloured red bunting with a golden inscription, showing the name of the country. Sometimes only as a shortcut, sometimes the full name, sometimes only in Russian or even multilingual. From about 1937 hammer, sickle and star were sometimes added. From about the mid-50s multicolored flags were introduced for the republics of the Soviet Union, whose knitting patterns had to be taken over by the subordinated autonomous Soviet republics.

The coat of arms of Chechnya was – like the flag – introduced in 2004 and shows a blue disc covered with a golden ring, now placed on a white escutcheon. The ornamentation of the flag is reproduced in red on the golden ring. Inside the golden ring, surrounded by ears of corn and crescent moon and star, a white disk with the national symbol in red in the middle, surrounded by, resting on an open book, a stylized house, a drilling tower and above the characteristic silhouette of Tebulosmta, the highest mountain in the country. The coat of arms used until 2004 showed a round, green shield with a black circle, in the middle of which a lying silver wolf on a pedestal, above a golden moon disk. In the lower part nine gold stars. This coat of arms was officially displayed on the flag until 2004, but was often omitted in practice.
