The origin of the name Selangor is unclear, there are only conjectures. Here are the three most important ones:
• The name goes back to the Malay word "langau", which means "blowfly", and refers to a legend that is said to have happened in the swamps in the north-west of the state
• The name is derived from a species of tree called "mentangau", which is said to occur in Kuala Selangor and along the Selangor River
• The name is derived from the Tamil word "Salang Ur", which is said to mean "village of the Salang"
