Meaning/Origin of the Coat of Arms

The coat of arms of Selangor is obviously more an emblem. It represents a fusion of objects representing courage and royalty. Halfmoon and the star in the center represent the Islam. The Red Spear (Tombak) in the middle is called Sambu Varna. On the right appears a short Kris Dagger (Keris Pendek) and on the left a long Kris Dagger (Keris Panjang), both are the symbols of royalty. The motto of the state appears in red Arabic Jawi letters: "dipelihara allah or", what means translated: "under the protection of Allah". A wide yellow belt (Tali Bengkung) appears underneath. It was formerly worn by local warriors to close their vest.

Origin of the Country's Name

The origin of the name Selangor is unclear, there are only conjectures. Here are the three most important ones:
• The name goes back to the Malay word "langau", which means "blowfly", and refers to a legend that is said to have happened in the swamps in the north-west of the state
• The name is derived from a species of tree called "mentangau", which is said to occur in Kuala Selangor and along the Selangor River
• The name is derived from the Tamil word "Salang Ur", which is said to mean "village of the Salang"
