The flag of Nagorno-Karabakh was the same as the flag of Armenia, the country's inhabitants were Armenians, and it was economically linked to Armenia. To distinguish the flag, it showed an angle of ascending and descending white stairs at the flying end.

Nagorno-Karabakh is situated among a mountains range which is named Karabakh Mountains. As the Armenians in the Karabakh Mountains - whose territories belonged until 1920 to Armenia - got awarded autonomy within Azerbaijan in the year 1923 they had obviously to renounce as a concession to Azerbaijan for their nations name and had to name itself Nagorno-Karabakhians. In this way came into being the Autonomous District of the Nagorno-Karabakhians and later Nagorno-Karabakh. The denomination "Nagorno-Karabakh" is of Russian origin an means the "hilly Karabakh" or also the "high situated Karabakh". The Armenians itself name Nagorno-Karabakh "Artsakh". The name Artsakh (Arzach) comes from the history of the country. In the pre-Christian Armenian Empire there was an Province of Artsakh and in the middle ages there was even an Armenian Kingdom of Artsakh.
